Boomer Learning LabThe motivation to give back to one’s community was once defined by civic duty alone. The next generation of volunteers, the so-called “Boomers,” look at their service differently. Organizations have traditionally relied on 55+ volunteers to return weekly for many years, while the next generation of volunteers will likely seek flexibility. Traditionally, volunteering has been by nature without autonomy, but the new 55+ volunteers seek increased independence and decision-making power. They want to be viewed partners, not subordinates. They seek to work for positive change, and they also want to gain personal fulfillment in the process. How will organizations respond? Specifically, how will your organization prepare to take advantage of the skills and interests of “the new volunteer”? To answer that question, RSVP San Francisco & Alameda Counties will offer a three-part Boomer Learning Lab in October and November, 2007. The series will consist of three separate workshops to help nonprofits prepare for and capitalize on this new kind of volunteer. DAY I: WHO ARE TODAY’S 55+ VOLUNTEERS?This two-and-one-half-hour workshop will explore generational differences--from the “Greatest Generation” of the 40s to the present day. We will build a working understanding of each generation and discuss the need “to do business differently” to engage today’s 55+ volunteers. DAY II: CREATING COMPELLING OPPORTUNITIESCreate your ideal retirement volunteer opportunity. Learn how to incorporate the needs of your organization with the needs of your volunteers. Learn four strategies for creating compelling and boomer-friendly opportunities. This is a two-and-one-half-hour workshop. DAY III: DEVELOPING A RECRUITMENT PLANLearn why marketing is important. What key concepts can you apply to volunteer recruitment? Develop and discuss a creative brief. Develop and discuss a concise “elevator” speech. Learn additional strategies for developing your recruitment effort. This is a two-and-one-half-hour workshop. For more information, click here to contact RSVP. Note: RSVP gratefully recognizes Coming of Age Philadelphia for helping us build these workshops. |
